September 11th, 2006 :: "Possibly No Robot"
Today's robot will either be posted in the evening, or might not be posted at all.

For the current assignment in my Beginning Illustration class, we were required to illustrate three modes of transportation: A bush plane in Alaska, a taxi cab in a big city, and some form of non-motorized transportation of our choosing. Each one had to be in a different media.

Besides an awesome Saturday morning/afternoon watching a soap box derby race, finishing up these three pretty much WAS my weekend, so I thought I'd show them here.

Bush plane in Alaska. Three-color linoleum block print. (Not super impressed with how this turned out, but that's what I get for rushing a print.)

A taxi cab in a big city. Brush and ink linework, colored digitally.

Non-motorized transportation in the form of a homemade, bicycle-powered submarine. All vector.

I really like all of these. good jeorb.
As for robots: maybe the lady is a robot?

Or maybe there's a robot passenger in the back of the taxi?

That looks like a robot fish to me!

And I really like the print, as in REALLY like it. What is it that you don't like about it?

awe man, every time i see your icon i'm like gee that's so familiar. and i just got it - there was a character in my high school italian textbook that it reminds me of. her name was angela. the textbook was 'avanti'!
Molly McCausland[info]mollinda on September 12th, 2006 06:16 pm (UTC)
I never did Italian but I'm sure they use the same photos for all of them!

I don't dislike it, I just know that if I had spent the time, it could've been better. I feel it's the weakest of the three when I look at them together.

We are our biggest critics aren't we?
chromobear[info]chromobear on September 11th, 2006 01:46 pm (UTC)
ya, i agree, print is cool! don't worry about print. prints have to them some weird inherent phenomenon that you always feel disappointed when you peel off the paper. come back to it later and you'll dig it.

I like the print! You are just too close to it.

Good choice on the bicycle-powered sub, I like the angry eyes on the fish.
BT (Bigtime) Livermore: Beardy[info]radrobot on September 12th, 2006 01:48 am (UTC)
It's mainly an issue of the end result, due to lack of time, not meeting the expectations of the initial concept.

The bike-powered sub was a fun one.
whatsername[info]girlaxia on September 11th, 2006 04:29 pm (UTC)
those are all great. i don't think you should worry about the print. it doesn't look rushed. and that submarine is too cute.
BT (Bigtime) Livermore: Beardy[info]radrobot on September 12th, 2006 01:38 am (UTC)
Oh, I'm not worried too much, everything's handed in, so there's no use now. Thanks, I like the sub too.

All look spiffy, really. The submarine/vector work is interesting because my exposure to your stuff hasn't turned up a lot of that. I dig it just the same.
BT (Bigtime) Livermore: Beardy[info]radrobot on September 12th, 2006 01:46 am (UTC)
All of my previous vector experience is from a few years ago; either for Flash banners and ads from when I was working for an agency, or various character animation projects I was involved with. I really love working in all vector, I just don't do it all that often anymore.
[info]rayfrenden on September 12th, 2006 02:44 am (UTC)
Well, I was surprised by its inclusion and the fact that it looked so swanky when, to me, it was out of left field, you know? Oh, and your class seriously makes me jealous; good for you on that tip.
BT (Bigtime) Livermore: Beardy[info]radrobot on September 12th, 2006 04:18 am (UTC)
I think this class will, and probably already has, helped me tremendously. I'll probably be doing more vector work this coming year. That and working on my brush and ink work are my big goals.
[info]rayfrenden on September 12th, 2006 05:04 am (UTC)
Good for you, man. I really like your style as is, but it can only get even better with practice. And that's an awesome position to be in!
